The Duchess Recommends . . .

Two Marriages, novellas by Phillip Lopate

The Duchess has long admired Phillip Lopate's essays, and a Monday trek to the Public Library downtown (post-Hama binge) yielded this gem of a book. Two Marriages details the breakdown of, predictably, two marriages, each of which ends in the timeworn, predictable ways (deceit, cuckoldry, et cetera). But those timeworn ways are refreshed in the hands of Mr. Lopate, who retains the poignancy and loneliness of heartbreak even though it happens to us all.
